Coi termini "mummia", "testina", "maschera" o "volto" sono indicate, nel territorio dell'Alto Reno, particolari figure antropomorfe in pietra che, nella gran parte dei casi, rappresentano teste virili poste nelle facciate degli edifici. Non di rado questi esemplari (forse d'origine celtica, forse d'origine goto - longobarda o romana) risultano rozzamente scolpiti a bassorilievo su un piano squadrato di un concio d'arenaria, ma non mancano eccezioni di notevole fattura. E' comune a tutte queste immagini un effetto di notevole espressività sovente inquietante.

"Maschere" are ancient, carved stone figurines occasionally seen on older houses in the Apennines. With their origins going back to pre-Christian days (Celtic, Roman or Longobard and Gothic), they were representations of spirits and were carved on houses to keep evil influences away. As with so many pagan customs, their use continued long after the area was Christianised.
